Ousmane Sonko issues stark warning, foresees electoral triumph for Pastef in Sénégal

The prospect of a potential dissolution of Sénégal’s National Assembly continues to fuel intense political discussions across the nation. During a Pastef rally held this Saturday in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko unequivocally articulated his stance on this hypothetical scenario, simultaneously delivering a sharp caution to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The prominent Pastef leader asserted that dissolving the National Assembly and subsequently holding early legislative elections would not benefit the current administration. He confidently predicted that his political faction would emerge as the overwhelming victor in such a ballot.

“If he organizes local elections, we will defeat him. If he dissolves the Assembly, it will be even worse for him. In fact, that is precisely what we prefer, for we will thoroughly trounce him,” Sonko declared.

Ousmane Sonko went further, even suggesting the possibility that the head of state could face significant political weakening following a potential electoral defeat.

“After that, I even fear he might abandon his post before 2029,” he added.

Sonko urges calm and vigilance among supporters

Beyond the electoral outlook, the president of Pastef also appealed to his supporters to exercise prudence and restraint. He specifically advised them not to fall victim to any potential provocations.

Ousmane Sonko believes that certain political actors are actively seeking to incite his party’s activists into reacting, thereby creating a pretext to justify measures against Pastef.

“I call on everyone to be vigilant and remain calm. Because they are currently trying to provoke Pastef so that the youth react, allowing them to dissolve the party and revoke its registration,” he affirmed.

For the Pastef leader, if his supporters manage to avoid provocations and maintain their mobilization, the upcoming electoral contests could very well result in a decisive advantage for his camp, which he described as merely “a simple walk in the park.”
