OM’s Greenwood transfer sparks controversy amid Fenerbahçe move

Olivier Marseille’s transfer saga has taken another unexpected turn, with Mason Greenwood’s move to Fenerbahçe now seemingly confirmed. The English winger, who had been linked with AS Roma, is set to leave Olympique de Marseille (OM) after a series of negotiations that have drawn criticism from Italian football circles.

The Marseille-based club faces financial constraints, pushing them to offload Greenwood to balance their books. The player’s transfer to Fenerbahçe marks a stark contrast to earlier reports that suggested AS Roma was his preferred destination, with Gian Piero Gasperini eyeing him as a key signing for the Serie A side.

Italian experts question Greenwood’s reliability

Italian football pundits have expressed skepticism over Greenwood’s transfer decisions. Roberto Pruzzo, a prominent journalist, criticized the unfolding situation, stating, “This kind of negotiation never ends well. We never truly know if the player genuinely wants to join Roma, and in the end, he winds up at Fenerbahçe. It’s rare to hear someone say, ‘This is the player I want,’ only to sign them hours later.”

Fernando Orsi, another analyst, added, “Football doesn’t hinge on Greenwood. As a person, he doesn’t seem dependable, and with half the transfer fee, clubs could find a better alternative fitting Gasperini’s style. The World Cup serves as a showcase for players to prove their worth.”

Marseille explores Plan B for attack

Paolo Marcacci, another football insider, has already suggested a replacement for Greenwood. “Moreira is an exceptional player whose profile aligns perfectly with Gasperini’s philosophy. His stock has risen, particularly after his World Cup performances. The same applies to Nusa, Garnacho, and others. Additionally, Tresoldi delivered a strong season. Gasperini could refine Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary is beyond the reach of Italian clubs, and in turning him down, they forgo a chance at Champions League football.”
