Nice forced to play crucial Ligue 1 playoff behind closed doors

Nice faces Saint-Étienne in a decisive Ligue 1 playoff without fans

The OGC Nice will have to play the second leg of the Ligue 1 playoff against AS Saint-Étienne without any spectators at the Allianz Riviera. This decision was upheld by the Appeals Committee of the French Football Federation (FFF) following incidents that occurred during the match against FC Metz on May 17.

The Nice-based club expressed strong disapproval of the ruling, calling it ‘an absurd decision’ in a statement. The sanction includes a two-match full stadium ban, with the second leg of the playoff being one of them, as well as a suspended point deduction for the 2026/2027 season.

Football club condemns ‘excessive’ punishment

In their official response, Nice’s management highlighted the severity of the sanction, particularly as the playoff could determine the club’s future in Ligue 1. ‘Playing this decisive match behind closed doors is already a harsh punishment. Denying the entire stadium the chance to support the team is an excessive measure, both sportingly and emotionally,’ the club stated.

The OGC Nice has vowed to challenge the decision through legal avenues, announcing their intention to seek conciliation with the French National Olympic and Sports Committee. Should this fail, they will take the matter to the Administrative Court to defend their rights.

Match context and implications

The first leg of the playoff ended in a goalless draw, leaving both teams in suspense ahead of the return fixture. The absence of fans could significantly impact the atmosphere and performance on the pitch, adding another layer of challenge for the Niçois.

The club’s cooperation with authorities during the investigation was acknowledged, yet the punishment remains unchanged. This has intensified the controversy surrounding the decision, with fans and pundits questioning its proportionality.
