Niamey hosts religious leaders training on combating radicalization
The League of Sahel Scholars, Preachers and Imams (LOPIS), in partnership with the Fusion and Liaison Unit (UNFL), convened a specialized training session in Niamey last Friday. The program targeted religious affairs officials from across Niger, focusing on the theme “Building intellectual immunity and dismantling radicalized discourse”.
The one-day workshop aimed to equip participants with tools to recognize and counter the spread of extremist ideologies within communities. Speakers emphasized the importance of fostering critical thinking among religious leaders to prevent the infiltration of radical narratives in Niger‘s diverse social fabric.
Key objectives of the training
- Enhance the analytical skills of religious leaders to assess ideological threats
- Promote dialogue-based approaches to address misinformation and extremism
- Strengthen community resilience against radicalization through education
- Encourage collaboration between religious institutions and state authorities
Expert-led sessions on ideological resilience
The training featured presentations by scholars and security experts, who explored historical and contemporary cases of radicalization in the Sahel region. Participants engaged in interactive discussions on the psychological and social factors that contribute to the appeal of extremist groups.
One session highlighted the role of Niger‘s religious leaders in shaping public opinion and countering false narratives propagated by violent factions. Attendees were provided with resources to develop localized campaigns that promote peace and tolerance.
Call for collective action
In closing remarks, organizers underscored the need for sustained efforts to protect Niger‘s youth from radical influences. They called on religious leaders to serve as frontline defenders of intellectual integrity, ensuring that mosques and madrasas remain spaces for learning and enlightenment rather than venues for hate speech.
The initiative reflects Niger‘s broader commitment to security and stability through community-led solutions.
