Moroccan military delegation wraps up high-level Mauritania visit

Strengthening military ties through strategic cooperation

At the invitation of Mauritanian authorities, a high-ranking Moroccan military delegation concluded a productive visit to Nouakchott this week, reinforcing the deep-rooted partnership between the two nations. Led by General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and Commander of the Southern Zone, the delegation engaged in high-level meetings to deepen mutual defense collaboration.

Key meetings and diplomatic exchanges

General Berrid was warmly received by President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghezouani at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott. The encounter underscored the strong diplomatic ties between Morocco and Mauritania, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of regional security and bilateral defense initiatives. Present at the meeting was Ambassador Hamid Chabar, representing Morocco’s diplomatic presence in Nouakchott.

Later in the day, General Berrid paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defense, where he met with Defense Minister Hanana Ould Sidi. In a gesture of appreciation, the Minister presented General Berrid with the National Order of Merit (Commander Grade) on behalf of the Mauritanian President, recognizing his contributions to military cooperation between the two countries.

Strategic military discussions forge ahead

The Moroccan delegation then joined their Mauritanian counterparts for the sixth session of the Joint Military Commission, co-chaired by General Berrid and Mauritania’s Chief of Staff. The discussions centered on evaluating past achievements and outlining future initiatives to enhance operational coordination, intelligence sharing, and joint training exercises.

Senior military officials from both nations praised the tangible outcomes of their collaboration, describing it as a model of strategic partnership in West Africa. They highlighted successful joint counter-terrorism efforts and border security initiatives as key pillars of their alliance, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
