Mali army regains control in key combat zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared they have regained the initiative and full control over all conflict zones targeted by attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) in the northern regions and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in central and southern areas.

In an official statement, the FAMA detailed that intense fighting persisted on Sunday near Anifif, located in the northeast, roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes followed the arrival of additional personnel and military equipment for the Azawad Liberation Front.

The army’s communiqué emphasized, “Confronted with this renewed pressure, our troops demonstrated unwavering resolve, continuing the fight with courage and discipline throughout the day.”

It further reaffirmed the armed forces’ unshakable confidence in their ability to safeguard national unity and territorial integrity, protect civilians, and defeat hostile forces.

Meanwhile, the Azawad Liberation Front spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also dismissed reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the commander remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
