Mali army claims upper hand against islamist groups in key zones

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have declared a decisive shift in momentum, asserting full control over regions previously targeted by coordinated attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, across central and southern Mali.

Renewed clashes and strategic reinforcements

According to an official statement, intense fighting resumed on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location in the northeast, approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes followed the arrival of additional fighters and resources directed toward the Azawad Liberation Front, escalating tensions in the area.

Resilient military response

The Malian Armed Forces emphasized their unwavering commitment, stating that their units engaged the enemy with relentless determination and operational discipline throughout the day. In their communiqué, the FAMa reaffirmed their absolute confidence in their ability to safeguard Mali’s sovereignty, protect civilians, and dismantle hostile forces threatening national stability.

Azawad Liberation Front denies leadership claims

Responding to reports about the status of its leadership, the Azawad Liberation Front issued a statement through its spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, dismissing claims of the death of its commander, Mbarek Ag Akli. The group asserted that Ag Akli remains actively involved in overseeing military operations across northern Mali, refuting any suggestions of a leadership vacuum.
