Following intense clashes in recent weeks, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a shift in momentum, asserting control over key areas targeted by both the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate operating in central and southern regions.
In an official statement, FAMA confirmed sustained operations on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location 110 kilometers south of Kidal, following the arrival of additional personnel and military assets to reinforce the Azawad Liberation Front’s positions. Troops engaged in prolonged combat, demonstrating resilience and tactical discipline in their response.
« We remain fully confident in our capacity to safeguard Mali’s sovereignty, protect civilians, and dismantle enemy forces, » the statement emphasized. The army’s resolve underscores its commitment to restoring stability across the nation.
Meanwhile, the Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anifif after renewed hostilities. Contradicting rumors, he firmly denied reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that Ag Akli continues to oversee military operations in the northern territories.
