Lansana Gagny Sakho clarifies stance on Ousmane Sonko and republican values

In a candid television appearance, Lansana Gagny Sakho, Chairman of the Board of Directors of APIX, shed light on his decision to distance himself from Ousmane Sonko, while reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the country’s republican institutions. Speaking on a widely watched morning program, he recalled initially aligning with Pastef’s political project, drawn by the individuals behind it. However, after the recent political transition, he declined an offer to lead the water and sanitation sector, prioritizing his principles over a position of authority.

Lansana Gagny Sakho emphasized, « I refused to compromise my values for a role. That choice allowed me to walk away with integrity. From the start, I have always stood by the Republic. »

Ousmane Sonko’s alleged disregard for state cohesion

Contrasting his own path, he accused Ousmane Sonko of never truly embracing the republic’s core values. The friction, he argued, stems from public statements made by Sonko during a critical diplomatic tour when the President was abroad. Specifically, he cited remarks questioning the government’s authority in the President’s absence, which he claimed embarrassed the Head of State and deepened divisions within the administration.

Advancing state efficiency while upholding justice

For Lansana Gagny Sakho, responsible governance means strengthening institutions and ensuring their smooth operation. Though acknowledging challenges on both sides, he highlighted significant progress in the justice sector as a testament to the administration’s efforts.

He also addressed recent upheavals at the Ministry of Justice, recalling a former minister’s bold assertion that no one could manipulate him. According to Sakho, this individual was replaced to secure a more compliant figure who could influence judicial decisions. « That assumption ignored a fundamental truth: judges are not puppets, » he remarked, stressing that power dynamics are far more complex than opposition narratives suggest.

His remarks come amid a wave of departures from Pastef, with several high-ranking party members crossing over to the presidential camp ahead of the upcoming launch of the Kiiraay party. Lansana Gagny Sakho has consistently voiced his support for President Diomaye Faye’s policies, championing institutional stability and continuity in governance.
