Inter Milan has significantly strengthened its defensive options by securing the permanent transfer of Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur. The 26-year-old English defender, who recently celebrated his birthday, has inked a long-term deal at San Siro, valid until June 2031.

Following a successful medical examination with both the club and Italy’s National Olympic Committee (CONI), Spence signed an annual contract worth €2.5 million, including performance-based bonuses. Tottenham will receive an immediate payment of €31.5 million, with an additional €3.5 million tied to performance milestones and bonuses.

This transfer marks Spence’s return to Italian football, where he previously impressed during a six-month loan spell at Genoa in the 2024 season. That experience proved pivotal in demonstrating his ability to thrive under the rigorous tactical demands set by Cristian Chivu. Spence’s versatility allows him to excel as either a right or left wing-back, providing Inter Milan with exceptional tactical flexibility.

Spence’s stock soared globally after his standout performances at the 2026 World Cup. The defender was a mainstay in England’s lineup, featuring in all eight matches throughout the tournament in North America. His international stature was further cemented when he started the semifinal clash against Argentina and the subsequent victory over France in the third-place playoff.

Spence becomes Inter Milan’s second English international signing of the summer, following defender John Stones’ free transfer from Manchester City. The Nerazzurri are now poised for the new Serie A season, with their campaign opener scheduled against Monza at home on August 22.
