Gabon’s President Oligui Nguema to visit France in july 2026

Strategic visit announced: Gabon’s President to meet French counterpart in 2026

On Tuesday, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, President of Gabon, revealed plans for an official state visit to France scheduled for July 20, 2026 during a media appearance. While specific details remain undisclosed, this trip marks another milestone in the evolving diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

The upcoming visit follows the direct dialogue established between Libreville and Paris since the conclusion of Gabon’s political transition. Key topics expected on the agenda include economic cooperation, environmental preservation, security challenges, and initiatives focused on forest conservation in the Congo Basin. Additionally, discussions will likely center on vocational training programs and joint efforts to combat climate change.

Diplomatic engagement gains momentum

Since assuming office in August 2023, President Oligui Nguema has made one previous official trip to France. His visit from May 27 to 31, 2024 culminated in a high-level meeting at the Palais de l’Élysée with French President Emmanuel Macron. During that encounter, both leaders recommitted to strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors, with particular emphasis on sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.

The 2024 visit also featured the Franco-Gabonese Economic Forum, which brought together nearly 600 business leaders in Paris. The event facilitated direct exchanges between Gabonese authorities and members of the Gabonese diaspora, fostering closer economic and cultural connections between the two countries.

Reciprocal visits highlight partnership

French President Emmanuel Macron has visited Gabon twice since 2017, most recently attending the One Forest Summit, an international conference co-organized by both nations to address environmental concerns. His most recent trip occurred from November 23 to 24, 2025, when he arrived at Léon Mba International Airport to be greeted by President Oligui Nguema.

During that visit, Macron emphasized France’s support for Gabon’s post-transition government, describing the relationship as a “renewed partnership based on equality and mutual respect”. The discussions led to concrete initiatives, including security sector reforms, the establishment of a natural resource protection academy, and plans to modernize Gabon’s national railway system.

With President Oligui Nguema’s upcoming visit to France in July 2026, both countries are signaling their intent to deepen collaboration. This will be the second official state visit by Gabon’s leader to France under his administration, following the 2024 trip and Macron’s visit to Libreville in late 2025. The diplomatic calendar between Gabon and France continues to accelerate, underscoring the importance of their bilateral relationship.
