Gabon achieved a major diplomatic milestone this Tuesday, June 2, 2026, by being elected to the position of vice-president for the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This selection places Gabon among the 21 newly designated vice-presidents and marks the country’s return to the leadership bureau of the UN’s primary deliberative body for the first time in nearly a decade.
Representing the African regional group alongside Cabo Verde, Égypte, Guinée-Bissau, Érythrée, and Zimbabwe, Gabon will officially begin its one-year mandate in September 2026. This term coincides with the solemn opening of the 81st UNGA session.
The Permanent Mission of Gabon to the UN will play a central role in managing the international legislative framework. Working in close coordination with the President-elect, Khalilur Rahman, Gabonese representatives will take on significant managerial and diplomatic responsibilities.
Strategic leadership and global governance
During this 81st session, Gabon is set to preside over various plenary meetings, including both ordinary sessions and high-level summits. Beyond chairing these discussions, the nation will hold a seat on the influential General Committee of the UN. This committee is responsible for organizing the assembly’s agenda, planning critical votes on international resolutions, and overseeing institutional priorities.
Furthermore, Gabon intends to collaborate with other member states to champion the core objectives of the African Group. These priorities include advancing sustainable development, driving climate action, and pursuing essential administrative reforms within the United Nations. This diplomatic engagement reflects the broader strategic vision established by the President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
