French interception exposes falsified Cameroon maritime registry

The French Navy’s recent operation off Sicily has brought to light a sophisticated scheme involving a vessel flying an illicit Cameroon flag. Inspections confirmed the Deliver oil tanker was not legally registered under Yaoundé’s maritime authority, despite its claims.

Escalating sanctions against shadow fleet operations

This interception follows the seizure of two other vessels—Tagor and Smyrtos—in early June within the English Channel, both flying counterfeit Cameroon flags. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed these actions target the so-called ghost fleet, allegedly linked to Russian maritime operations.

Macron emphasized the strategic importance of these measures: “We will not allow the ghost fleet to bypass sanctions and fund Russia’s war efforts.” His statement underscores the growing European consensus on countering circumventions of international restrictions.

In response, Cameroon’s Ministry of Transport has intensified its crackdown, sanctioning and deregistering 39 vessels under its flag in recent weeks. Authorities describe these measures as essential to conducting physical audits and digitalizing maritime records, ensuring tighter oversight and protection of the country’s maritime registry.

Legal and geopolitical implications

The falsified Cameroon flag incident highlights broader concerns about maritime fraud and sanctions evasion. By exploiting weaker registries, vessels linked to sanctioned entities attempt to obscure their origins and destinations. The French operation, coordinated with similar efforts by the United Kingdom, signals a coordinated European response to disrupt these illicit networks.

For Cameroon, the crackdown is not only about enforcing maritime law but also safeguarding its reputation as a legitimate maritime nation. The physical and digital audits aim to restore trust in the country’s flag, which has been exploited by operators circumventing international sanctions.
