France’s Historic Exit Met With Controversial Calls
The French national team’s hopes for World Cup glory were shattered on Tuesday after a 0-2 defeat to Spain in the semifinals of World Cup 2026. Despite a flawless run to this stage with six consecutive victories, Didier Deschamps’s squad failed to overcome the Spanish collective brilliance and tactical discipline. The match, which ended with a clear performance gap, left fans and analysts questioning the officiating and the team’s own execution.
Deschamps Points to Questionable Calls
In a press conference following the match, Didier Deschamps acknowledged France’s technical shortcomings but also raised concerns about the referee’s competence. “Let me ask this: does the referee have the level to officiate a semifinal?” he questioned. “There were several questionable situations—it wasn’t just the penalty. I have no personal issue with the referee, but consider the question.” His remarks fueled speculation about whether external factors influenced the outcome.
De la Fuente Counters With a Sharp Response
Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s head coach, responded with a mix of humor and defiance. “When you lose, you tend to look for excuses,” he remarked. “We’ve faced tough calls too, like against Uruguay. Referees often let the game flow. Both teams were treated equally tonight.” He dismissed claims of biased refereeing, emphasizing that both sides faced similar challenges in decision-making.
He continued, “The referee didn’t favor one team. He made one call—a disallowed goal for offside. But I’m not focused on the refereeing. Everyone involved must improve: referees, VAR, coaches, players—we all have to do better every day.”
Spanish Captain Joins the Debate
Rodri, captain of the Spanish side, also weighed in, highlighting the broader issue of missed fouls. “This is the third game where we’ve dealt with these situations—10 or 15 fouls go uncalled. If you don’t whistle, defenders keep playing the same way. Today was especially clear. But credit to the referee for a strong performance overall.”
The French team, now eliminated for the third time in major tournaments by Spain, will aim to salvage their campaign in the third-place playoff on Saturday. Meanwhile, Spain advances to the final, seeking their second World Cup title after 2010.
