The 34th and final matchday of Ligue 1 football is upon us this Sunday, May 17, 2026. From securing coveted European qualification to avoiding the dreaded relegation playoff, the stakes are incredibly high across the league.
While Paris Saint-Germain, already crowned French champions for the fourteenth time earlier this week, prepares to face Paris FC in a local derby at Jean-Bouin, Sunday’s concluding Ligue 1 fixtures promise an abundance of twists and turns. Significant uncertainties persist for both European berths and the crucial relegation playoff spot. We delve into the critical issues defining this ultimate day of the championship season.
Lille holds its destiny
Behind champions Paris Saint-Germain and second-placed RC Lens, three clubs remain locked in a fierce contest for the third and final direct qualification spot for the UEFA Champions League: Lille (3rd, 61 points), Lyon (4th, 60 points), and Rennes (5th, 59 points).
Unbeaten since February 1st, a remarkable run of thirteen matches without defeat, the Lille footballers are the sole team with their fate entirely in their own hands to secure this third position. If LOSC triumphs against relegation-threatened Auxerre, they cannot be overtaken. The northern club has already guaranteed at least a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1, securing a spot in the UEFA Europa League. Meanwhile, Lyon’s players are hoping for a Lille misstep as they host Lens. Should they emerge victorious against *Les Sang et Or*, who may well be focused on their upcoming Coupe de France final against Nice next week, Lyon could at minimum secure a Champions League preliminary round spot.
Marseille-Rennes: winner takes all, loser risks more
The pivotal clash at the Vélodrome between Olympique Marseille and Stade Rennais could prove costly for the vanquished. If Stade Rennais avoids defeat, they are assured of participating in the Europa League, with a victory potentially elevating their European standing. However, a loss could send them into the considerably less prestigious – and lucrative – Europa Conference League. Franck Haise’s Rennes squad has recently suffered two significant setbacks against direct European rivals (Lille, 2-1, and Lyon, 4-2). On the other side, Olympique Marseille coach Habib Beye, returning to the club that dismissed him in February, faces even greater pressure.
After a season filled with both sporting and off-field drama, Marseille, who secured an unconvincing victory against Le Havre following a heavy defeat to Nantes, must aim higher than their current 6th place. Yet, a single reverse could see Marseille lose everything: Monaco, sitting seventh and just two points behind OM, could leapfrog *Les Olympiens* and exclude them from European qualification if they secure a win against Strasbourg.
Relegation playoff for Le Havre, Auxerre, or Nice
While Metz and Nantes are already confirmed for relegation to Ligue 2 next season, three clubs are battling to avoid the dreaded relegation playoff position: Le Havre (14th, 32 points), Auxerre (15th, 31 points), and Nice (16th, 31 points).
Despite an early goal from Sofiane Diop (2-1), Auxerre largely dominated Nice last week, earning themselves a temporary reprieve. However, Auxerre faces the unfortunate task of traveling to Lille for their final fixture. Paradoxically, current playoff occupants Nice appear well-positioned to secure their safety. The Nice squad will host Metz, the league’s bottom team, who have not won a match since November. Le Havre, meanwhile, travels to Lorient (9th), a consistently solid club. The Normandy side could find themselves in the playoff spot if their two direct rivals for survival secure victories, marking a continuous downward slide for Le Havre, who haven’t registered a win since early February against Strasbourg.
