Côte d’Ivoire award recognizes CNTIG director’s leadership in geospatial innovation

Geospatial leader Dr Edouard Fonh-Gbéi honored for driving Côte d’Ivoire’s digital transformation

Abidjan witnessed a moment of national pride on June 18, 2026, when Dr Edouard Fonh-Gbéi, Director-General of the National Committee for Remote Sensing and Geographical Information (CNTIG), was awarded during the African Economy Builders Evening. The recognition celebrates his relentless efforts in advancing geospatial technologies as a cornerstone for Côte d’Ivoire’s economic and territorial development.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Fonh-Gbéi emphasized the collective nature of the achievement, stating, « This honor reflects the dedication of an entire team, a shared vision pursued with conviction, and daily work fueled by passion. » He extended his gratitude to the organizers and all partners who have supported the CNTIG’s mission over the years.

The award comes after nearly 14 years at the helm of the CNTIG, a role he assumed in 2012 following an international recruitment process. With a doctorate in civil engineering specializing in satellite geodesy and over two decades of international experience, he has positioned geoinformation technologies at the heart of Côte d’Ivoire’s modernization strategy.

Under his leadership, the CNTIG has evolved into a key driver of digital transformation across the country. Geospatial data and mapping solutions developed by the institution now underpin critical sectors, including urban planning, agriculture, and infrastructure management. The recognition serves as both validation and motivation to deepen these efforts.

« Receiving this prize fills me with gratitude, but it also signals a renewed commitment to pushing boundaries with greater ambition, rigor, and impact. The best achievements are still ahead of us, » Dr Fonh-Gbéi remarked.

The African Economy Builders Evening, established in 2006, is a prestigious platform dedicated to celebrating excellence and merit in African entrepreneurship and business leadership. The event highlights individuals and organizations whose work contributes to the continent’s economic progress.
