Chad authorities dismantle illegal slaughter network in N’Djamena

In a coordinated crackdown ahead of the Tabaski celebrations, authorities in N’Djamena have dismantled an illegal slaughter operation in the Machaga district of the 8th arrondissement. The joint operation, involving the Ministry of Livestock, the Sanitary Police, and defense forces, uncovered over 100 diseased cattle and 40 sick sheep. These animals had been purchased by an unidentified international NGO and distributed through local collaborators, with plans to offer them as charitable meat for Tabaski.

The following day, Dr. Ousmane Yosko Souhoumi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Production, personally inspected the site on May 28, 2026. Upon verifying the conditions, he condemned the operation and issued strict directives: all deceased animals must be incinerated, salvageable livestock must receive immediate veterinary care and feeding, and heightened public health monitoring has been enforced to protect citizens.

Authorities emphasized the risks posed by such clandestine practices, which threaten public health during a major religious festival. The operation underscores the government’s commitment to preventing the distribution of unsafe meat while ensuring food safety standards are upheld.
