Burkina Faso cuts diplomatic ties with France following escalating tensions
In a decisive move, Burkina Faso has formally severed all diplomatic relations with France, a decision France condemns as «hostile and groundless» while considering reciprocal measures.
Burkina Faso terminates diplomatic ties with Paris
The announcement came on Friday, June 26, as Burkina Faso’s government declared the immediate termination of diplomatic relations with its former colonial power. The decision follows a sharp decline in relations between Ouagadougou and Paris.
In an official statement broadcast on national television, Burkinabè authorities accused France of «relentless activism against Burkina Faso’s interests,» including alleged neocolonial ambitions and active support for subversive networks and terrorist groups operating in the country and across the Sahel region.
The statement clarified that the decision applies strictly to the diplomatic framework between the two nations and does not affect the deep historical, cultural, and social bonds shared by the peoples of both countries. The government reassured that the safety of French nationals in Burkina Faso remains a priority.
France responds with reciprocal measures under review
Reacting to what it called a «unilateral and unfounded» decision, France’s Foreign Ministry expressed regret while confirming that reciprocal measures were being evaluated. French authorities stressed their commitment to ensuring the security of state personnel and the local French community in Burkina Faso.
«In light of the current situation, we urge all French nationals in Burkina Faso to exercise heightened vigilance,» stated a spokesperson for the French diplomatic corps. The call reflects growing concerns over escalating instability in the region.
Deepening rift since 2022 coup
Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power following a coup in September 2022, relations between Burkina Faso and France have steadily deteriorated. Key developments include:
- The withdrawal of French military forces from Burkinabè territory
- Public denunciation of military cooperation agreements
- Suspension of several French media outlets within the country
Burkina Faso, a member of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) alongside Mali and Niger, has since strengthened ties with alternative partners, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
