Border security operation intercepts 24 migrants near kassouala

A routine border patrol operation in northeastern Benin has uncovered an unauthorized migrant movement, leading to the interception of a 24-person convoy near the Kassouala checkpoint on the Okpara bridge.

On the morning of June 16, 2026, law enforcement officers conducted a standard inspection at the border crossing point. The team identified 23 Nigerian travelers of Hausa ethnicity, all carrying valid identification documents. Their intended destination was gold mining sites in Burkina Faso, where they planned to seek employment in the artisanal mining sector.

The group had reportedly departed from Tchaki, a Nigerian locality, before crossing into Benin territory. They spent the night in the nearby village of Boukouro, just a few kilometers from the border, before continuing their journey. However, their movement was halted by Benin’s border security forces during the early hours of the morning.

investigation focuses on suspected local organizer

Among those detained was a 20-year-old Beninese national from Bassila, currently residing in Parakou. Authorities suspect him of orchestrating the clandestine migration operation. While all migrants possessed proper documentation, investigators are probing deeper to determine whether this was part of a larger migrant smuggling network.

All 24 individuals were transferred to the Tchaourou police station for further questioning. An official investigation has been launched to uncover the full extent of the operation and assess potential involvement of organized crime in facilitating illegal border crossings.
