Tom Saintfiet ends tenure as Mali national team coach
After two years at the helm, Tom Saintfiet has officially stepped down as head coach of the Mali national football team. His departure was announced through an Instagram post dated Monday, April 27, in which the Belgian tactician expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Malian squad.
The Fédération Malienne de Football (FEMAFOOT) and its president, Mahazou Cisset, issued a statement on Tuesday acknowledging Saintfiet’s contributions. In their communiqué, they praised his dedication, professionalism, and the results achieved during his tenure.
Milestones under Saintfiet’s leadership
Since taking charge in August 2024, Saintfiet guided the Malian team through 17 competitive matches—including African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, and the 2025 AFCON, where Mali reached the quarter-finals before bowing out to eventual champions Senegal. His tenure concluded with a record of 9 wins, 6 draws, and 2 defeats in official fixtures.
Heartfelt tributes and reflections
In his farewell message, Saintfiet described his time in Mali as a journey of “pride and commitment, despite challenging circumstances.” He extended his deepest appreciation to the Malian people for their unwavering support, as well as to his players, technical staff, and the leadership of both the FEMAFOOT and the government.
The departing coach reserved special praise for Mahazou Cisset, calling him a “true gentleman” for his collaborative approach and willingness to seek common ground. Saintfiet’s final words on social media underscored his respect for the Malian football community and his admiration for the resilience shown by the team.
A legacy of resilience in turbulent times
Saintfiet’s tenure coincided with a period of significant adversity for Mali, including security concerns linked to regional instability. In his statement, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by the nation and reaffirmed his solidarity with the Malian people. “In these trying times, my thoughts are with the nation. I send a message of compassion, unity, and hope for a brighter future,” he wrote.
Saintfiet’s journey in African football
Before taking the reins in Mali, Saintfiet accumulated extensive experience across the continent. His coaching career has included stints with Gambia, Togo, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, earning a reputation as a seasoned tactician in African football.
