Togo and european union partnership sees significant growth, says outgoing ambassador

As his diplomatic tenure in Togo concludes, European Union Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones was received by President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé this Thursday. The occasion provided the diplomat an opportunity to deliver a glowing assessment of a partnership he characterized as having substantially expanded in both scope and influence.

Following his farewell audience, the European Ambassador highlighted the considerable broadening of the collaboration between Brussels and Lomé during his mission. This partnership now spans crucial sectors including sustainable development, essential infrastructure, energy, robust governance, education, and enhanced security. He explained that his visit aimed to engage with the Togolese Head of State, listen to his perspectives, and evaluate the current state of their ongoing cooperation.

Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones affirmed that the assessment reveals a substantial reinforcement of this vital partnership, both in its extensive reach and deep impact.

Thriving investment programs

The diplomat underscored the robust growth of European investment programs within Togo. He highlighted a portfolio that presents numerous opportunities for both the Togolese and European private sectors. This dynamic, he articulated, is designed to bolster economic growth and job creation in strategically important areas such as energy, agriculture, and digital technology.

Security and development: an essential connection

The ambassador also delved into the deepening cooperation in peace and security, which he considers integral to any development initiative. He noted that the European Union has intensified its support for the Togolese armed forces, assisting both in counter-terrorism efforts and in strengthening maritime security across the region.

Gwilym Ceri Jones extended his appreciation for the strong relations forged between Togo and the European Union, expressing confidence in the continued advancement and intensification of this partnership beyond his own mandate.

DCP 2021-2027: a framework for cooperation

European interventions in Togo are guided by the Multi-annual Joint Programming Document (DCP) 2021-2027, which allocates a substantial portfolio of 201 million euros. This strategic framework directs funding towards three primary pillars: fostering human development and socio-economic inclusion, promoting sustainable agro-industries and responsible natural resource management, and strengthening a peaceful and resilient Togolese society built on inclusive governance.

A new tripartite mechanism for business growth

This cooperative momentum received a further boost in June with the official launch of a tripartite cooperation mechanism. This initiative brings together the Togolese government, Team Europe, and Eurocham Togo. This permanent consultation framework aims to enhance the attractiveness of the business climate, stimulate European investments, and support the economic reforms undertaken by the Togolese government.

Furthermore, this mechanism is designed to channel cooperation towards more tangible outcomes: robust job creation, dynamic private sector development, and the structural transformation of the Togolese economy. These initiatives collectively, as affirmed by both parties, exemplify the enduring strength of a partnership poised for continued success beyond Ambassador Jones’s departure.
