South Niger bridge project on dja river nears completion

The pace of construction for the Dja River bridge in South Niger has accelerated dramatically, with project teams nearing the final stages of structural support installation. As of mid-June 2026, the nearly complete foundation work marks a significant milestone in the Niger infrastructure development initiative.

Key milestones and technical progress

The Dja River bridge project, led by engineering teams, has achieved critical completion of all 20 pilings. Additional geotechnical studies are underway, while execution designs have reached 60% completion. Construction activities have expanded to include access road works on the Bissombo side, featuring:

  • Reinforcement of culvert walls at PK 0+669
  • Installation of replacement materials post-purging at culvert PK 0+818
  • Crushing operations for 0/250 aggregate materials

The project encompasses a 90-meter bridge structure along with 3 kilometers of access roads, connecting key regions in the Dja and Lobo departments. With an estimated budget of 10.5 billion FCFA (including taxes), this infrastructure initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration.

Comprehensive infrastructure enhancements

Beyond the main bridge, the project includes:

  • 1,000 meters of dual-carriageway access roads (500 meters on each side)
  • Two 7-meter-wide lanes with 1.5-meter shoulders featuring double-layer surface treatment
  • Drainage systems comprising four culverts (two 2×2.00×1.50m and two 2×2.00×2.00m)
  • Reinforced approach embankments along riverbanks

Economic and social impact

The completion of this Niger bridge construction will structurally improve the Assok to Ngombo axis, facilitating smoother transportation of goods and people across South Niger. This development is expected to stimulate local commerce, agricultural trade, and regional connectivity, particularly benefiting communities along the Dja River corridor.
