National dialogue: a pivotal moment for Senegal

During an audience at the Palais de la République, Amadou Ba joined other former heads of government in a constructive exchange with the President. He described the initiative as a crucial step for the nation, emphasizing the importance of inclusive discussions to address pressing national issues.

Key discussions and proposals

Amadou Ba outlined several critical topics discussed with the President, including:

  • Political situation and institutional reforms: Evaluating the proposed changes and their potential impact on governance.
  • Economic challenges: Highlighting the strain on the economy due to global economic conditions.
  • Security concerns: Addressing rising regional tensions and their implications for Senegal’s stability.

On electoral reforms, he stressed the importance of extended deliberations to build stronger consensus, suggesting an additional 10 to 15 days of discussions to finalize key decisions.

Economic concerns and financial credibility

As a former Finance Minister, Amadou Ba expressed deep concerns over Senegal’s current economic climate, noting that global factors are already impacting households. He recalled that during his tenure, Senegal went six years without receiving any funds from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the country went twelve years without a financing program.

Despite this, Senegal maintained its financial credibility. However, the current economic context demands compromise to secure essential funding for the nation’s development and investment needs.

He also warned about the consequences of successive financial rating downgrades, which increase borrowing costs and limit the government’s financial flexibility.

Security and regional stability

Amadou Ba emphasized the need for a comprehensive dialogue on security issues, especially amid shifting regional dynamics. He called for increased support to bolster the country’s defense and security forces.

A call for unity beyond political divides

While affirming his opposition stance, Amadou Ba stressed that certain national interests transcend political divisions. He urged a calm and cooperative approach to address the country’s challenges, stating:

“I remain in the opposition, and that will not change. Yet, some issues go beyond politics. We must work calmly and collectively for the greater good of the nation.”

His remarks reflect a broader appeal for national unity and shared responsibility in navigating Senegal’s future.
