Senegal’s leadership at the africa forward summit: a push for autonomous financing

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko recently presided over the official send-off ceremony for the Senegalese delegation embarking for Nairobi. This significant high-level gathering, known as the « Africa Forward » summit, is scheduled to take place in Kenya until May 13, 2026. It convenes a prestigious assembly of heads of state, international funding bodies, and key private sector stakeholders. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who has already arrived at the venue, will soon be joined by a dedicated team of ministers and financial experts, all poised to articulate a transformative vision on the global stage.

Prior to their departure, the head of Government articulated an unequivocal policy direction, firmly rooted in the nation’s commitment to sovereignty: « Our mission in Nairobi is to champion a clear principle: development is unattainable without sovereignty, and sovereignty cannot exist without self-sufficient financing. » For Dakar, the objective extends beyond mere participation; it is about actively shaping the redefinition of the continent’s financial frameworks, advocating for an end to conditionalities often deemed detrimental to African economies.

The « Africa Forward » summit introduces an innovative format for dialogue between the African continent and France. Discussions are anticipated to address pressing issues such as debt restructuring, the funding of crucial infrastructure projects, the transition to sustainable energy, and matters of peace and security. Sénégal is determined to champion more equitable public-private partnerships (PPPs), designed to mobilize essential resources while simultaneously safeguarding the nation’s strategic decision-making independence.
