African football faces crisis as CAF revokes Senegal’s AFCON 2025 title
The 0-3 defeat retroactively imposed on Senegal in the AFCON 2025 final has not only cost the West African team their title but has also plunged African football into an unprecedented crisis of confidence. Numerous clubs, experts, and international media have collectively voiced strong criticism against the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Recent developments indicate a growing intensity of reaction to the CAF’s controversial decision. According to AS, Egyptian club Pharco FC has declared an indefinite boycott of all tournaments organized by the CAF, protesting the handling of the matter. The club views the ruling against Senegal as “unjust, politically motivated, and against the spirit of sportsmanship.”
Beyond Pharco FC, numerous other Egyptian and Algerian clubs have voiced solidarity with Senegal, contemplating future boycotts of continental competitions. Prominent teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa and Tanzania’s Simba SC have condemned the decision as “shameful,” warning of a perilous precedent for African football.
The CAF had previously declared Senegal to have forfeited the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco with a 0-3 scoreline. The official ruling cited Senegal’s breach of regulations for leaving the field in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco late in regular time.
The core of the controversy stems from the fact that the match actually resumed after a 10-minute stoppage. Senegal subsequently returned to the pitch, maintained their 1-0 lead after extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye, and even celebrated lifting the trophy in Rabat on January 18.
However, following a formal complaint lodged by Morocco, the CAF unexpectedly altered the outcome, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory and the championship title to the host nation.
This sudden reversal instantly sent shockwaves throughout the global football community. L’Équipe labeled it among the most “bizarre and controversial” decisions in modern football history, while The Athletic highlighted the unprecedented nature of such a ruling in a continental championship.
Numerous football pundits and experts have also challenged the legitimacy of this decision. They argued that if Senegal had indeed committed a serious infraction, the referee and match organizers should have halted the game or declared a forfeit immediately, rather than waiting until after the match concluded to change the result following Morocco’s appeal.
The Senegalese Football Federation has since confirmed its intent to lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have further indicated that the Senegalese national team is reportedly considering withdrawing from CAF competitions altogether, citing what they perceive as unfair treatment.
This ongoing incident severely tarnishes the reputation of African football, especially given that the AFCON stands as the continent’s most prestigious national team tournament. Many observers fear that a prolonged crisis could significantly jeopardize the prestige and competitive integrity of future CAF-organized events.
