Senegal politics: Ousmane Sonko’s party rejects government participation

Tensions escalate between Senegalese leader Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye just seven days after the latter reshuffled the government and appointed a new Prime Minister. Earlier attempts to integrate key members of Sonko’s Pastef-Les Patriotes party into the executive branch have collapsed, as confirmed in an official statement released on June 1st by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on his Facebook page.

The party firmly declared that no representatives from Pastef-Les Patriotes will join the incoming administration, marking a decisive shift in the political landscape of Senegal. The decision follows intense negotiations over recent days, during which Pastef leaders engaged in multiple discussions with the Head of State to explore potential collaboration in shaping the new government.

The party emphasized its commitment to « acting with responsibility » and aligning with the strategic directives set by its governing bodies. A lengthy meeting on the morning of June 1st between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko revealed both areas of agreement and fundamental disagreements regarding the role and influence of the ruling majority within the executive structure.

Deep divisions over governance remain unresolved

Following the inconclusive meeting, the COMEX of Pastef-Les Patriotes reviewed the situation and presented revised proposals to the President. However, these were ultimately rejected, leading the party to withdraw entirely from the government formation process. The communiqué left no room for ambiguity: « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the upcoming government, nor will any of its members be appointed as ministers ».

This move carries significant implications for Senegal’s political stability, particularly as citizens grapple with pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in talks, Pastef extended wishes of « full success to the new government », signaling its intention to continue its political engagement from the National Assembly, where Ousmane Sonko currently serves as Speaker. The coming days will be critical in assessing the impact of this political realignment at the highest levels of Senegal’s government.
