Senegal politics: Ousmane Sonko's concerns over justice minister appointment

Senegal’s political landscape is facing fresh uncertainties as Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef movement, raises serious doubts about the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Justice Minister. Sonko’s concerns stem from Sarr’s alleged involvement in past legal disputes that have strained relations between Pastef and the judiciary.

The newly formed government is already drawing criticism, with the Ministry of Justice becoming the focal point of Ousmane Sonko’s reservations. In a public statement, Sonko voiced his unease over the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as the new Keeper of the Seals, while also cautioning Prime Minister Al Amine Lô and certain members of his own party who have joined the executive branch.

The unease within Pastef is palpable. Sonko argues that Sarr’s selection does little to inspire confidence, given his past role in several legal cases that have shaped the tense dynamics between his movement and key judicial institutions.

« The lineup for the Justice Ministry does not reassure us. Me Moussa Sarr was a central figure in multiple cases handled by certain courts, » Sonko remarked. While he has chosen to reserve final judgment until Sarr’s actions unfold, his skepticism remains evident.

« We harbor doubts, but we will observe. And from the National Assembly, we will take the necessary steps, » he warned, signaling that Pastef intends to closely monitor the ministry’s actions.

Prime Minister Al Amine Lô under scrutiny

Beyond Sarr’s appointment, Sonko also directed criticism at Prime Minister Al Amine Lô. Described as a technocrat upon his appointment, Lô is accused by Sonko of straying from his designated role, veering instead into political maneuvering.

« I urge the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat. To step away from political games. Since he was chosen for his technical expertise, he should stick to that, » Sonko declared.

He went further, suggesting he possesses insights into Lô’s recent initiatives. « I know a great deal about what is happening and what he is doing. Out of courtesy, I have been patient with him so far. But he should not provoke me, » Sonko cautioned.

Pastef officials face internal backlash

Sonko’s criticism extended to Pastef members who accepted positions in the new government, defying the party’s collective stance. Among those targeted are Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé. Sonko accused them of joining the executive without prior consultation with party leadership. « Let me be clear: those who are in government are there on their own accord. When the time comes, we will address their cases, » he stated.

These remarks underscore the early tensions surrounding the new government’s formation. However, it is the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Justice Minister that has sparked the most significant concerns from Sonko, who insists he will wait to see Sarr’s actions before drawing conclusions.
