Senegal’s new cabinet raises eyebrows as Sonko warns over Justice Ministry

Senegal’s political landscape is already buzzing with tension as the new government takes shape. Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has expressed serious concerns over the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Minister of Justice, casting doubts on the move’s potential impact on his party’s interests.

The newly formed cabinet is facing immediate scrutiny, with the Justice Ministry at the center of the controversy. Sonko, addressing the public, voiced his apprehensions about the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as the new Keeper of the Seals, signaling a lack of reassurance for his party, Pastef.

Sonko highlighted that the newly appointed Justice Minister has been entangled in multiple judicial cases that have previously strained relations between Pastef and certain courts. The leader emphasized that the choice of Me Moussa Sarr does little to inspire confidence within his ranks.

« The lineup announced for the Justice Ministry does not inspire confidence. The new minister was a key figure in cases handled by certain jurisdictions, » Sonko stated, underscoring his party’s skepticism.

While Sonko remains cautious and refrains from making a final judgment, his party’s skepticism lingers. « We have our doubts, but we will assess the situation. We will take necessary actions when required, » he warned, hinting at Pastef’s intent to closely monitor the minister’s actions.

Prime Minister Al Amine Lô under fire

Beyond the Justice Ministry appointment, Sonko also took aim at Prime Minister Al Amine Lô. Described as a technocrat upon his appointment, Lô is accused by Sonko of straying into political maneuvering rather than focusing on governance.

« I urge the Prime Minister to stick to his technocratic role and avoid political games. He was chosen for his expertise, so he should limit himself to that, » Sonko remarked.

Sonko went further, hinting at his awareness of certain actions taken by the Prime Minister. « I am well-informed about what’s happening and what he’s doing. Out of courtesy, I’ve been lenient so far, but he should not provoke me, » he cautioned.

Defectors from Pastef face backlash

Sonko did not limit his criticism to government appointees. He also singled out several Pastef members who joined the new cabinet, defying the party’s stance. Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé were named as examples of individuals who accepted positions without prior consultation with the party’s leadership.

« Those who have taken up positions in the government are there for their own interests. We will address their cases in due course, » Sonko declared, signaling potential disciplinary measures within the party.

These remarks underscore the early friction surrounding the new government. However, the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Justice Minister remains the most contentious issue, with Sonko insisting on observing the minister’s actions before drawing conclusions.
