Dakar — A packed legislative agenda has been adopted by Senegal’s National Assembly following a pivotal Conference of Presidents meeting on Friday, June 19. Key labor and social security codes are slated for committee review on Saturday, June 20, with full chamber votes scheduled for Monday, June 22.

Yet all eyes remain fixed on the constitutional amendment proposal, which has become the focal point of intense political debate. During a detailed briefing to the Assembly’s Bureau, Ousmane Sonko, Speaker of the Parliament, revealed that he had yet to receive the mandatory feedback from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the proposal formally submitted weeks ago.

In response to this prolonged silence from the Executive branch, Sonko has imposed a firm deadline: Monday, June 22. Should the presidency fail to respond by then, the Assembly’s Bureau will immediately convene to advance the legislative process regardless of the Executive’s position. The Speaker emphasized his determination to see the constitutional revision debated and approved before the current ordinary session concludes.

During the same meeting, Sonko also underscored the Parliament’s ongoing expectation for two critical financial documents—already approved by the Council of Ministers but yet to be tabled. These include the revised budget bill and the Budget Orientation Debate framework. The legislative and executive branches now find themselves in a high-stakes waiting game.
