The inauguration ceremony commenced with the Constitutional Court declaring the presidential election results, as judges took their solemn seats on the podium. Moments later, Romuald Wadagni ascended to the podium, where he delivered his oath of office. Dressed in a dark suit and blue tie, he raised his right hand and vowed to “uphold and defend the Constitution,” pledging to face legal consequences should he fail his duty. The oath was followed by a ceremonial salute of twelve cannon blasts.
Following the swearing-in, Wadagni was formally proclaimed Grand Master of national orders. The Chief of Staff then presented him with the national flag, a symbol of his new responsibilities as the leader of the nation.
The newly elected leader outlined his vision for Bénin, committing to govern with integrity, courage, and unwavering dedication. He emphasized the importance of the rule of law and the protection of fundamental freedoms. His address concluded with a promise to foster inclusive economic growth, ensuring that every family in the country would benefit from progress.
Security and regional cooperation
In his speech, Wadagni reaffirmed Bénin’s resolute stance against terrorism, vowing to safeguard the nation’s security against any threats. He also stressed the need for deeper collaboration with neighboring countries, acknowledging the presence of sixteen foreign delegations, including high-ranking officials from Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Notably, relations with Niger remain strained, a challenge the new administration will need to address.
Addressing the assembled dignitaries, Wadagni declared, “We are bound together by necessity to work as one.” His words underscored the critical importance of regional unity in tackling shared challenges, from security threats to economic development.
Among the distinguished guests were former Béninese presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, whose presence added historical significance to the occasion. The ceremony, held on the esplanade of the Palais des congrès, marked the beginning of a new chapter for Bénin and its people.
