Prime minister ousmane sonko orders urgent flood preparedness

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a clear directive to relevant government ministers, urging them to implement all necessary measures to avert potential flooding before the onset of the upcoming rainy season.

During a cabinet meeting held this Wednesday, the head of government delivered firm instructions aimed at enhancing the nation’s readiness for the risks associated with the wet season. According to government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye, several critical, immediate actions are slated for swift implementation.

The Prime Minister particularly emphasized the strategic pre-positioning of intervention resources. Furthermore, he called for an inter-ministerial simulation exercise to be organized before June 15, 2026. This crucial drill will assess the state services’ capacity to respond effectively to potential disaster scenarios.

A communiqué from the Council of Ministers also highlighted ongoing governmental preparatory efforts. These include the comprehensive clearing of water drainage networks, meticulous inspection of existing drainage infrastructure, the deployment of essential pumping equipment, and the development of detailed emergency response plans for areas identified as highly susceptible to flooding.

Recognizing the multi-faceted nature of flood control, Ousmane Sonko has called upon all state departments to collaborate seamlessly. This synergistic approach will be coordinated by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with robust support from the Ministry of Interior, particularly concerning civil protection and broader crisis management initiatives.
