Olympique Lyonnais prioritizes european qualification with ligue 1 fixture request
Olympique Lyonnais is making a strategic move to maximize its chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The Rhône club has officially submitted a request to postpone its inaugural Ligue 1 match of the upcoming season.
Club management has reportedly sent a formal letter to the LFP (Ligue de Football Professionnel) requesting a rescheduling of their away fixture against Toulouse, originally slated for August 22. This postponement is contingent upon OL advancing to the Champions League playoff rounds. The match’s current timing would place it directly between the two crucial legs of a potential European playoff tie, a period deemed vital for the club’s continental aspirations.
European ambitions at the forefront
OL commenced pre-season training early, on June 29, specifically to prepare for the Champions League third preliminary round, scheduled for August 4 or 5, followed by the second leg on August 11. Should they successfully navigate this stage, Paulo Fonseca’s squad would then proceed to the playoff fixtures, set to take place just days later.
In justifying their request, Lyon invoked the concept of “the superior interest of French football,” an argument previously utilized by Paris Saint-Germain in a similar scenario last season. The LFP is expected to issue a decision on this matter in the coming days, a ruling that could significantly enhance OL’s preparation for a critical two-legged European confrontation.
