The Nigerian military announced on Sunday that it had successfully freed 360 hostages who were abducted by Boko Haram in southern Borno State, located in the northeast of the country.
The operation was conducted in the Mandara Mountains, an area long used as a hideout by the terrorist group. Military authorities in Abuja have intensified their offensive against the insurgents, following a recent joint operation with the United States that resulted in the neutralization of 175 ISWAP fighters.
Nigeria continues to grapple with a deep-rooted security crisis in its northern regions. More than a decade of jihadist insurgency, coupled with a surge in ransom-focused kidnappings and illegal mining activities, has severely undermined regional stability and safety.
