Morocco participates in second political conference on africa’s peace-security-development nexus in Mombasa

Libye, Mohamed Arrouchi, crise libyenne,

Morocco is actively participating in the second Political Conference on the nexus between peace, security, and development, taking place from July 11 to 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.

This significant conference serves as a direct continuation of the inaugural Political Conference on the peace, security, and development nexus, which was successfully hosted in Tanger from October 25 to 27, 2022. That initial gathering notably culminated in the adoption of the pivotal Tanger Declaration.

The Tanger Declaration established a comprehensive African vision for this critical nexus, underscoring the importance of harmonized public policies, strengthened collaborative partnerships, and the execution of tangible projects. These initiatives are all designed to foster sustainable peace, enhance robust security, and drive inclusive development across the African continent.

The Tanger Process has now firmly cemented its position as the continent’s foremost platform for dialogue concerning the intricate interdependencies linking peace, security, and development throughout Africa. It brings together key continental and international partners deeply committed to these areas, including prominent entities such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The primary aim of this second conference is to meticulously evaluate the progress achieved in implementing the Tanger Declaration. Furthermore, it seeks to identify and refine operational approaches capable of further reinforcing the vital connection between peace, security, and development across Africa.

Discussions at the conference are structured around five specialized panels. These sessions are dedicated to various crucial topics, including the practical implementation of the Tanger Declaration through specific thematic projects, exploring the transformative role of artificial intelligence and youth-driven innovations, examining the strategic relationship between security expenditures and development outcomes, devising strategies for mobilizing essential funding for Nexus projects, and drawing valuable lessons from the African Union’s support for complex political transitions.

During these proceedings, the Moroccan delegation, spearheaded by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi—who serves as the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to both the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa—will articulate Morocco’s forward-thinking vision. This vision advocates for an integrated approach to peace, security, and development, firmly based on fostering robust partnerships and promoting African-led solutions that are specifically tailored to meet the continent’s unique priorities and realities.
