Military cooperation ends french base at camp de gaulle in Gabon

France-Gabon military ties shift as Camp De Gaulle transforms

During the July 14 festivities in Libreville, Ambassador Fabrice Mauriès delivered a pivotal message: “The Camp De Gaulle no longer functions as a French military base.” His declaration marked a decisive milestone in the evolving defense partnership between France and Gabon, as both nations finalize a groundbreaking restructuring of their cooperative security framework.

Mauriès emphasized that the transformation reflects a shared commitment to modernizing bilateral defense relations, noting that the process has reached its “final phase.” He described the collaboration as a “co-constructed adaptation,” where both countries are reshaping their security cooperation to meet contemporary challenges. The shift moves beyond traditional military basing toward a more agile, partnership-driven model.

The Ambassador highlighted the Détachement de liaison interarmées au Gabon (DLI-G) as the new operational core of this cooperation. While the Camp De Gaulle’s physical infrastructure remains, its function has fundamentally changed. Instead of housing a permanent French military presence, it will now operate under a revised mandate, with activities centered on training, advisory support, and joint operations. Regional training institutions will continue their mission, reinforcing Gabon’s defense capabilities.

Mauriès also underscored deeper security ties, announcing progress on a national financial crimes unit in collaboration with Gabon’s Justice Ministry. Other priorities include combating drug trafficking, irregular migration, border surveillance, and strengthening law enforcement agencies such as the police, gendarmerie, fire services, and prison administration.

This strategic reassessment follows Gabon’s 2023 political transition, which prompted both nations to redefine their military cooperation. The shift from the Éléments français au Gabon (EFG) to the DLI-G signals a pivot toward a more consultative and capacity-building approach, aligning with evolving regional security needs.

The Ambassador’s remarks confirm that the Camp De Gaulle’s transformation is not merely symbolic but part of a broader effort to recalibrate the France-Gabon partnership for the challenges ahead.
