Cameroonian political figure calls for impartial media coverage

Willy Mengue, a leading voice in Cameroonian political discourse, has urged Equinoxe TV to correct what he describes as imbalanced coverage of recent party developments. His request follows a television appearance by Mamadou Mota, who defended the controversial return of Maurice Kamto to the presidency of the Cameroonian Renaissance Movement (MRC).

Mengue argues that the network’s coverage lacks fairness and called for immediate action to restore balance. In an open letter to the television station’s management, he emphasized the need for “equitable information treatment,” “journalistic truth-seeking,” and “the right to information.”

“There is an urgent need to either organize a direct debate between the two factions or provide a substantial right of reply to the program that addressed this contested issue,” Mengue stated. “While you extended the microphone to Mr. Mota on this matter, the pursuit of truth requires that you grant the same opportunity to those who contest this decision, including myself as their representative.”

In the program aired Sunday evening, Mamadou Mota argued in favor of Kamto’s return to the MRC leadership, a move that Willy Mengue has vehemently opposed. Mengue described the process as a “fraudulent return” and warned that Equinoxe TV‘s reputation as a “people’s channel that reports beyond the image” would be compromised without proper balance.

“Your report on the tampering with the MRC’s foundational texts to facilitate a resigning member’s fraudulent return to power must be corrected through this right of reply,” Mengue wrote. “The Cameroonian people are watching this unfolding situation closely.”
