Macky Sall returns to Dakar for meeting with Bassirou Diomaye Faye

After relocating to Morocco following his departure from office in March 2024, former Senegalese President Macky Sall is scheduled to visit Dakar on July 17, 2026, for a meeting with current Head of State Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The purpose of his trip is linked to his candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.

In an official statement, Sall expressed his gratitude to President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for the opportunity to engage in discussions. He also conveyed his appreciation to the people of Senegal for their unwavering support since announcing his candidacy.

The announcement of Sall’s visit has sparked concerns and criticism within the political sphere, particularly from members of the Pastef party led by Ousmane Sonko. Some activists argue that welcoming Sall could legitimize allegations of pre-election violence and governance failures under his administration. Notably, Senegal has not formally endorsed Sall’s UN candidacy—it has been championed instead by Burundi.

Sall’s political legacy and career highlights

Macky Sall served as President of Senegal from 2012 to 2024, succeeding his political mentor, Abdoulaye Wade. Before taking the helm, he held the position of Speaker of the National Assembly. Earlier in his career, he served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2007, following Idrissa Seck.

Sall’s ministerial roles included leading key portfolios such as Mines, Energy, and Hydraulics from 2001 to 2004. He also served as Minister of State for Internal Affairs and Local Communities from 2003 to 2004 and was the Director-General of PETROSEN.

International engagements post-presidency

Since stepping down and settling in Marrakech, Sall has remained active on the global stage. He has participated in numerous international summits and high-level meetings, engaging with world leaders to advance his UN aspirations.
