Gabon gains un vice-presidency in major diplomatic breakthrough

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Gabon secured a pivotal role by being elected vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This landmark achievement places Libreville back among the leading figures of the UN’s most influential deliberative body for the first time in nearly a decade.

The Gabonese delegation will not stand alone in this endeavor. Five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—will join Gabon in assuming these responsibilities starting September 2026, at the opening of the 81st session of the UNGA.

As the designated representative of the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN is poised to take on a central role. Collaborating closely with UNGA President-elect Khalilur Rahman, the Gabonese team will help shape and streamline the international legislative agenda, ensuring smoother and more effective decision-making processes.

Steering global diplomacy from the inside

Over the next twelve months, Gabon will wield significant managerial and political influence within the UN. Its representatives will lead multiple plenary sessions, including high-level meetings of global significance.

The true center of power lies within the UN’s influential General Committee. Gabon’s participation in this body will allow it to directly influence critical institutional functions—from setting the agenda to orchestrating key votes on resolutions and managing the organization’s top priorities. A strategic foothold to amplify Africa’s voice on the world stage.

Africa’s urgent priorities take center stage

Beyond procedural duties, Gabon’s vice-presidency offers a platform to champion the continent’s most pressing issues. Through close coordination with fellow member states, Gabon aims to push for sustainable development, climate action, and structural reforms within the UN system. These priorities align with the broader African agenda, reinforcing the continent’s collective diplomatic influence.

This diplomatic triumph underscores the success of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s vision of elevating Gabon’s international standing and fostering stronger ties across the globe.
