Gabon CLR rallying cry ahead of 2027 party congress

The leadership of Gabon’s Centre des Libéraux Réformateurs (CLR) has convened an urgent weekend meeting in Libreville to reboot the party’s operations ahead of next year’s highly anticipated congress. Founded by Jean-Boniface Assélé, the movement is rolling out a multi-pronged push to re-energize its grassroots networks and publicly reaffirm its backing for President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

Gathered at the Cabaret des Artistes in the capital’s 5ᵉ arrondissement, the expanded party executive mapped out a roadmap to revitalize the CLR’s presence across the country before the 2027 gathering. “Whenever we face challenges, voices quickly declare the party is finished,” Assélé told delegates. “Yet the energy in this room today shatters every such claim.”

Building the party’s future on solid foundations

With Gabon’s political calendar filling up, the CLR is determined to reclaim its voice in national debates. A specially formed think-tank has been tasked with proposing bold reforms to party structures, while fresh appointments will soon be announced to fill key leadership posts. The goal is twofold: strengthen internal discipline and broaden the movement’s reach nationwide.

Speaking plainly to activists, Assélé urged an unflinching assessment of the CLR’s current standing and the hurdles ahead. “This gathering gives us a chance to map out the path forward—honestly and without illusion—so we can arrive at the congress stronger and more united,” he said.

Highlighting a year of transition involvement

The weekend talks also served as a platform to unveil the CLR’s 2024-2025 activity report, a document that underscores the party’s pivotal role during Gabon’s ongoing political transition. From the August 2023 constitutional referendum to last year’s presidential vote, the CLR positioned itself at the heart of the transformation process, consistently aligning itself with the head of state’s agenda.

As rival factions jockey for influence in Gabon’s shifting political landscape, the CLR is staking its claim to remain a decisive force. The coming months will reveal whether the party can convert its renewed ambition into the kind of grassroots momentum that shapes future elections and entrenches the gains of the Fifth Republic.
