Gabon advances marine conservation with new zoning plan consultations

The Gabonese government is advancing its marine conservation agenda through nationwide consultations on the National Marine Space Zoning Plan. Teams from the Ministry of Blue Economy have been traveling across key coastal regions to present this visionary initiative, which aims to harmonize environmental protection with sustainable economic development.

In coastal cities like Port-Gentil, these public meetings have brought together local fishing communities, including artisanal fishermen and women fish traders, to discuss the proposed zoning framework. This initiative aligns with the Blue Obligations project, positioning Gabon as a global leader in innovative conservation financing for marine ecosystems.

Balancing conservation and livelihoods

The zoning plan represents a technical yet strategic effort to designate protected marine areas while ensuring continued access to vital resources for local communities. Critical habitats such as mangroves are among the priority zones under consideration, alongside traditional fishing grounds and climate-resilient corridors.

By July 19th, ministry experts will finalize the identification of these zones across the Estuary, Nyanga, and Ogooué-Maritime provinces. The draft plan will then proceed to regulatory review before implementation.

This comprehensive approach underscores Gabon’s commitment to preserving marine biodiversity for future generations while supporting the livelihoods of those who depend on the ocean’s resources.
