France Morocco strengthen strategic partnership with new agreements

France and Morocco deepen strategic alliance with fresh commitments

During an official visit to Rabat, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu underscored the importance of elevating the long-standing ties between France and Morocco. The two nations are poised to formalize around fifteen new agreements aimed at reinforcing their bilateral cooperation, building on the momentum established since the landmark 2024 partnership.

Partnership on the verge of a major upgrade

Sébastien Lecornu opened the 15th High-Level Meeting between France and Morocco by describing it as a “turning point” in their diplomatic relations. He emphasized the need to “scale up” cooperation across critical areas such as security, counter-terrorism efforts, and joint initiatives across Africa. Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch echoed this sentiment, stressing the urgency of accelerating the implementation of the exceptional strengthened partnership agreements ratified in 2024.

Fifteen new accords set to reshape bilateral ties

The upcoming agreements span economic, security, migration, cultural, and defense sectors. Key projects include the development of a regional express rail network in Rabat, enhanced defense procurement partnerships, and expanded cultural exchanges. The visit may also lay the groundwork for a state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, potentially culminating in the signing of an unprecedented friendship treaty proposed by Lecornu.

Strategic rapprochement despite lingering controversies

The visit follows a period of stabilized relations since France recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2024. However, fresh reports alleging the use of the Pegasus spyware by Moroccan authorities have surfaced. Neither the French government nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has addressed these claims, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the partnership with Rabat.
