Moroccan Football Federation faces deadline for CAN 2025 final defense
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has until 7 May to submit its legal defense to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) in the ongoing dispute surrounding the CAN 2025 final.
This deadline marks the initial phase of the legal process, following the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF)’s appeal against both the FRMF and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The TAS confirmed receipt of the appeal on 25 March, triggering standard procedural timelines.
Under TAS rules, the appellant (FSF) is granted 20 days to file its appeal brief, while the respondents (FRMF and CAF) receive an equal period to prepare their defense.
The FSF has requested a suspension of proceedings, delaying the establishment of a definitive timeline or a hearing date. Despite this, the TAS has reiterated its commitment to resolving the case efficiently while ensuring fair treatment for all parties.
The FRMF is reportedly preparing a meticulously crafted legal dossier, expressing confidence in a favorable resolution. Matthieu Reeb, TAS Secretary General, emphasized the tribunal’s capability to handle such disputes with specialized, impartial arbitrators, while prioritizing timely yet fair proceedings.
Background of the dispute
On 18 January, during the final match, the Senegalese team walked off the pitch for 16 minutes in protest against a late penalty awarded to Morocco. This incident led the FRMF to file an appeal under CAF Articles 82 and 84, challenging the legitimacy of the result.
On 17 March, the CAF Appeals Jury ruled in favor of Morocco, overturning the original 1–0 victory for Senegal. The FSF has since contested this decision, escalating the matter to the TAS.
Analysts suggest the FRMF’s legal strategy is built on solid ground, with expectations of a swift yet thorough resolution. While the timeline remains flexible due to the FSF’s request for suspension, all parties are urged to expedite the process without compromising due process.
