World football’s governing body, FIFA, has closed the book on allegations that the Algeria-Austria clash at the World Cup was pre-arranged, opting not to pursue any formal investigation into claims of a mutually beneficial outcome.
The controversy erupted after both teams appeared to engineer a draw in their final group-stage fixture, a move that would secure their simultaneous advancement to the knockout rounds. The thrilling encounter, which ended 3-3, featured a dramatic late equalizer from Austria in the 96th minute—just three minutes after Riyad Mahrez had put Algeria ahead.
The pulsating finale capped a five-minute surge that included 110 consecutive passes, nearly eliminating Austria before their last-gasp response. Tempers flared as Austria’s Marco Arnautović was seen confronting the Algerian bench, his frustration evident in animated gestures.
In the end, Austria finished second in the group while Algeria, though third, progressed alongside them. Observers questioned whether the late concession was intentional, but FIFA dismissed all suspicions outright. Ralf Rangnick, Austria’s head coach, forcefully denied any wrongdoing, even as Mahrez acknowledged the outcome felt unusual.
Mahrez, a former Manchester City star, reflected on the bizarre sequence: « It was a bit strange, to be honest. We were playing on the wings, and they were sitting deep, but in the last minute, one of them made a pass, turned, and I had to react. I have to respect football. The ball came to the goalkeeper, and I should have scored—I have to try. I know the situation was strange, but this is football, and I must respect it. For Austria, the important thing is they scored and secured their spot. We both advanced, and that’s what matters. »
Austria now faces a stern test against European champions Spain in the Round of 16, with a potential clash against Portugal or Croatia looming in the next round. Meanwhile, Algeria is set to take on Switzerland, eyeing a possible quarterfinal showdown with Argentina if both sides maintain their momentum.
