Attack targets military position in N’Guigmi

A coordinated assault by Boko Haram fighters on a military outpost near N’Guigmi, a strategic garrison town in the Diffa region, resulted in significant casualties among Nigerien troops. The assault occurred on Friday morning, leaving multiple soldiers dead and prompting urgent counter-operations by the armed forces.

The attack unfolded in N’Guigmi, a city situated along the shores of Lake Chad, a vast wetland shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. Since 2009, this area has become a stronghold for jihadist groups, with both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) maintaining a presence in the region.

Casualties confirmed by local sources

Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, reported that “around a dozen soldiers” were killed in the ambush. They also noted that several attackers were neutralized during the clash, while military forces launched immediate clearance operations in the aftermath of the violence.

Social media posts from N’Guigmi residents corroborated these accounts, stating that “ten military personnel and four members of the national guard” lost their lives in the assault. While official channels have not yet issued a formal casualty report, the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP) confirmed that victims “perished following an attack by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.”

Security situation remains volatile

The assault underscores the persistent security challenges facing Niger in its fight against extremist violence. The Diffa region, bordering Nigeria, has been a flashpoint for years, with insurgent groups exploiting the region’s porous borders and remote terrain to launch attacks on civilian and military targets alike. Authorities continue to reinforce security measures as the humanitarian crisis in the area deepens.
