Boko haram retreat from lake Chad after regional military strikes

Boko Haram fighters flee Lake Chad strongholds following joint military operations

Jihadist militants from Boko Haram have abandoned multiple positions along the Lake Chad basin after coordinated aerial bombardments and ground operations led by Chad, Nigeria, and Niger. Reports from local witnesses and security sources confirm the strategic retreat from key insurgent bases.

Military operations force Boko Haram retreat from Lake Chad

Precision strikes target jihadist hideouts

Since Friday, Chadian armed forces have conducted targeted strikes against Boko Haram positions on remote islands within the Lake Chad basin—a vast marshy region shared by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. Local testimonies indicate militants evacuated islands such as Dogon Chukwu, Kangarwa, and Gashakar using small boats, taking families with them. Clashes were also reported on Kaukeri Island, one of the group’s last major strongholds in the area.

Civilian casualties emerge from military response

Civilian lives were tragically affected during the operations. Nigerian fishermen working on islands under Boko Haram control were reportedly killed in the bombardments. Graphic footage shows critically injured victims receiving emergency care at Bosso Hospital in Niger. Many fishermen in this region continue to operate in jihadist-controlled zones, often forced to pay extortion fees to the insurgents.

Military retaliation follows deadly ambushes

The coordinated strikes come in response to a series of devastating attacks against Chadian troops. Last week, Chad declared three days of national mourning following the deaths of two high-ranking generals in an ambush. Days earlier, an assault on a military outpost along the lake’s shores resulted in at least 24 soldier fatalities. According to a Nigerian intelligence source, the air raids involved joint coordination between Chad, Nigeria, and Niger, with each nation deploying two fighter jets.

Lake Chad region remains under jihadist threat

The insurgency led by Boko Haram and its affiliate, Islamic State West Africa Province, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions across the Lake Chad region since 2009. As violence spreads to neighboring countries, regional governments have reinvigorated the Multinational Joint Task Force to intensify counterterrorism efforts against armed jihadist factions.
