Benin government launches bold seven-year agenda with Wadagni’s directives

President Wadagni sets the tone for transformative governance

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, President Romuald Wadagni convened the maiden Council of Ministers of his seven-year term, marking the official launch of a new governance era for Bénin. Fresh from his investiture ceremony on May 24, the newly sworn-in administration gathered at the Palais de la Marina to receive strategic directives from the Head of State.

The inaugural session, documented in the official minutes, began with a warm welcome from President Wadagni to the newly appointed cabinet members. The leader emphasized the gravity of their mission, urging them to view their roles not as positions of personal privilege but as sacred duties to the nation. He called for unwavering commitment to national service, rooted in discipline, transparency, and collective solidarity—free from partisan or self-serving influences.

Core values to steer public service

The Head of State outlined the foundational principles that must govern every government action. He insisted on sobriety in leadership, uncompromising integrity in decision-making, and unwavering solidarity across the executive team. These values, he stated, are non-negotiable pillars for efficient and ethical public administration.

Addressing regional disparities and security challenges

Among the top priorities highlighted during the session was the urgent need to bridge the development gap between Bénin’s municipalities. President Wadagni called for accelerated efforts to eliminate disparities through targeted infrastructure projects, enhanced access to essential public services, and increased investment in local governance.

The security landscape also featured prominently in the discussions. Following recent armed incursions in the northern regions, the Head of State underscored the imperative of strengthening national defense and territorial protection. He tasked the government with maintaining robust security measures to safeguard citizens and stabilize vulnerable areas.

A restructured government workflow for greater efficiency

The new administration is implementing a streamlined governance structure to enhance operational efficiency. Starting this term, the Council of Ministers will convene in regular monthly sessions on the first Wednesday of each month. Extraordinary meetings may be called as needed to address pressing matters.

The Interministerial Committee will meet twice monthly—on the first and third Mondays—to ensure cross-sectoral coordination. Additionally, joint sessions will be organized, uniting the Council of Ministers, the Interministerial Committee, and sectoral ministers to tackle complex policy issues collaboratively.

This historic first meeting signals the official kickoff of a transformative seven-year journey, following President Wadagni’s swearing-in on May 24, 2026.
