Chad secures key deals at world urban forum in azerbaijan

The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development, and Housing presented the results of Chad’s mission to Baku, Azerbaijan, during the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13). The debriefing session took place at the minister’s office, gathering key participants from the delegation.

The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the First Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, officials from SOPROFIM, and representatives from UN-Habitat. Discussions at the forum centered on housing challenges, sustainable urbanization, and strategies to bolster city resilience against climate change impacts.

The minister highlighted that Chad’s involvement in the event significantly enhanced the country’s profile in global urban discussions and allowed it to contribute to policies shaping Africa’s urban future. A dedicated pavilion showcased Chad’s national initiatives in urban planning and housing, attracting international attention.

One of the most significant outcomes was the announcement of an official visit to Chad by the UN-Habitat Executive Director, scheduled for September 9-11, 2026. This visit will assess the country’s urban landscape and review multiple project proposals submitted by Chadian authorities.

The minister also revealed that Chad has been selected as one of the top ten eligible countries for the UN Green Climate Fund, thanks to a proposal backed by Kenya. This milestone could unlock substantial financing for urban resilience projects, particularly flood mitigation efforts.

During the forum, Chad engaged in discussions with Kenya and Morocco to explore new partnerships in urbanization, social housing, and informal settlement upgrading. Future cooperation missions and knowledge-sharing initiatives are under consideration to strengthen these collaborations.

According to the minister, this mission marks a turning point for Chad, offering tangible pathways to convert newfound opportunities into long-term, impactful projects for its people.

The country’s participation in WUF13 underscores its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban development, aligning with the vision of President Idriss Déby Itno.
