Bénin and Niger move toward border reopening talks
A high-level meeting between Beninese and Nigerien delegations in Cotonou signals progress toward reopening their shared border. The talks follow President Romuald Wadagni’s recent visit to Niamey on June 2, as part of ongoing efforts to restore bilateral ties.
Led by Niger’s Minister of State for Security, General Mohamed Toumba, and Benin’s Minister of African Integration, Adjadi Bakari, the June 20 expert committee meeting in Cotonou covered critical areas including security, defense, diplomacy, law, and economic cooperation. Closed-door negotiations resumed on June 21.
Border reopening remains contingent on finalizing agreements in defense, security protocols, and customs procedures. Both nations are working to align their frameworks to ensure a seamless and secure cross-border transition.
