The President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, embarked on a landmark working visit to Bamako on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Welcomed by Mali’s Head of State, General Assimi Goïta, the Beninese leader laid the groundwork for a sweeping overhaul of cooperation between Cotonou and Bamako, culminating in the adoption of strategic resolutions.
This visit sends a powerful signal for regional integration. Against the backdrop of shifting dynamics in West Africa, Benin and Mali have chosen the path of dialogue and mutual reinforcement. At the historic Koulouba Palace, Romuald Wadagni engaged in extensive discussions with General Assimi Goïta. Both administrations described the meeting as “deeply fraternal and highly productive.”
Economic and trade bridge strengthened
At the core of the negotiations was the revitalization of economic exchanges. Recognizing the pivotal role Cotonou’s port plays in supplying Mali, the two heads of state agreed to intensify bilateral trade. To formalize these ambitions, the immediate relaunch of the Benin-Mali Joint High Commission was announced. The second session is scheduled to convene shortly to implement these economic agreements and streamline the movement of goods, services, and investments.
Security and sovereignty: a united front
Confronted with the security challenges gripping the Sahel-Saharan belt and West Africa, both capitals have aligned their strategies. A key resolution addresses the enhancement of security coordination to more effectively combat terrorism and organized crime.
Diplomatically, the two leaders reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs. This stance underscores a shared determination to uphold each nation’s strategic choices on the global stage.
“The futures of our peoples are intertwined by history. Today, we are writing a new chapter rooted in mutual respect and co-development,” a member of the Beninese delegation noted.
Roadmap to Cotonou: a reciprocal visit in the making
The agenda also included cultural exchanges and people-to-people rapprochement as top priorities. In a gesture of continuity, Romuald Wadagni extended a formal invitation to General Assimi Goïta for an official state visit to Benin. The invitation was accepted, with dates to be determined through diplomatic channels.
This Bamako meeting marks an unmistakable turning point in diplomacy, proving that despite regional geopolitical shifts, the bridges of pragmatic cooperation remain firmly anchored.
