Algerian Sonelgaz begins 40 MW power plant project in N’Djamena
A high-level delegation from Sonelgaz, Algeria’s state-owned energy giant, has arrived in N’Djamena to initiate groundwork for a landmark 40 MW power plant project in the Chad. This initiative aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s strategic vision to bolster African cooperation, particularly through South-South partnerships, following President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s official visit to Algeria from April 22 to 24.
The Algerian delegation, led by Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz-International, was formally received by Tchad-Elec officials. The meeting included Algeria’s Ambassador to Chad and key officials from Chad’s Ministry of Energy. The delegation also met with Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Chad’s Minister of State for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation, and Passalé Kanabé Marcelin, Chad’s Minister of Water and Energy.
The visit underscores the project’s critical role in deepening economic and energy ties between Algeria and Chad. During their stay, the delegation conducted comprehensive technical discussions with Tchad-Elec representatives, focusing on project logistics, regulatory frameworks, and establishing joint working teams. These preparatory steps are essential to ensure seamless coordination before ground inspections and construction begin.
Key objectives of the delegation’s mission
During their visit, the Sonelgaz team will:
- Assess site infrastructure to determine feasibility and requirements;
- Analyze grid connection feasibility to integrate the new plant with Chad’s existing power network;
- Verify compliance with national and international technical and regulatory standards;
- Develop a shared roadmap to guide project phases and ensure timely execution;
- Launch technical assessments of the designated site to finalize construction plans.
These efforts reflect a shared commitment to building a sustainable energy partnership. As highlighted in the official statement, Sonelgaz is committed to supporting African partners through knowledge transfer, capacity building, and tailored energy solutions that meet the continent’s growing needs.
The project represents a significant milestone in Algeria’s strategy to expand energy cooperation across Africa, reinforcing its role as a reliable partner in the region’s development.
